Rationale

With advancements in internet authentication mechanisms, such as the introduction of OAuth, many accounts are now interconnected with more established entities. For instance, an email account can serve as a gateway to access various social media platforms, act as a recovery email for other accounts, or even function as a unique identifier in certain gaming platforms.

However, as netizens become registered users on numerous websites, it becomes increasingly challenging, if not impossible, to keep track of the platforms where their email addresses have been utilized. This includes instances where the email and password combination is used or when signing in through alternative platforms.

Addressing this issue, the Kotovaulo Project aims to provide a solution by enabling netizens to record both intraplatform credentials (credentials used for direct logins) and interplatform credentials (credentials accessible through sign-ins from other platforms).

Origin

Kotovaulo project started from a project named vowstrauld_sap. The name was scrambled letters of “password vault”. The project had a monolithic structure. It became difficult to manage which led to its suspension until the author gained enough free time.

When the author had a free time, it was shared to close friends. This was the time the project was renamed into Kotovaulo. The project was divided into three kinds repositories for it to be manageable. The repositories just have to follow the REST API specification for maximum compatibility.

The name Kotovaulo is a hybrid portmanteau of an English word and two Japanese words: the word vault itself, 言葉 [ことば] (Romanized as kotoba which means words) and ボールト (Romanized as booruto [emphasizing lengthened vowel sound] which is a loan word for vault). The vault and ボールト were blended first which results into vaulo. In other words, the project means “words vault” in literal sense. Besides, a software following the REST API specification of Kotovaulo project may contain different passwords of a user.
